Sometimes, we grow fond of our problems. They can begin to seem comfortingly familiar. When, as eventually all problems do, they start to become less pressing - or even disappear entirely - we try to keep them alive. We continue to persuade ourselves that they exist, even when they don't. It helps us to create a sense of continuity. It stops us, we imagine, from having to start afresh with new difficulties that we may not know our way around so well.
