need of the hour

Individual transformation is world transformation.

All of us think of changing the world around us. Sri Bhagavan reminds us that change , if any, has to only occur within ourselves.

In a beautiful event at the BSE convention hall in Mumbai, yesterday, various people shared their awakening through the Oneness process.

Yes, we are on the threshold of unprecedented changes , bringing in its wake both challenges and opportunities.

Man cannot stagnate. He evolves or decays.

Our ability and capacity to cope with change would determine the journey of the next few years. The rate of change is huge.

Anchoring in centeredness is the need of the hour.

KBC and other things...

been rather hectic off late..professional and social commitments...
posting takes a back seat at these times...
was on the sets of kbc recently , courtesy ajay(on my blogroll) ....a social movement of sorts...the public frenzy is still there..and the new host...well...he is a natural people's person though it sure must be tough to go through those episode shoots in quick succession and maintain a creative exuberance...
my profession takes me into a lot of live programming spaces...guess monotony is a natural emergence everywhere...but such shoots seem to be at a different level..couple of episodes daily in a shoot span of about 10-15 days can sure get tiring with it's monotony...
definitely would not grudge the man the monies he is reputed to have been paid for this...tough job....
and this one from my inbox....
DEATHS THAT MADE EVEN TOP DOCTORS WONDER...
This case happened in a hospital's intensive care ward where patients always died in the same bed and on all Sunday mornings at 11a.m, regardless of their medical condition. This puzzled the doctors and some even thought that it had something to do with the supernatural. No one could solve the mystery as to why the deaths took place at 11 AM. So a world-wide expert team was constituted and they decided to go down to the ward to investigate the cause of the incidents. So on the next Sunday morning few minutes before 11a.m. all doctors and nurses nervously waited outside the ward to see forthemselves what the terrible phenomenon was all about. Some were holding wooden crosses, prayer books and other holy objects to wardoff evil........
Just when the clock struck 11... and then...... then..... then........ John Galt, the part-time Sunday sweeper, entered the ward and unplugged the life support system & plugged
in the vacuum cleaner!!!!!!!!!!

vidya's rendevouz with simi...

read this fascinating excerpt in today's DNA.To be aired this Sunday on Star.

Simi: Do you feel you are the chosen one?
Vidya: When we want things to happen in a certain way and they don't, we think that's the end of the world. But I'm a diehard optimist. I believe that all happens for the best.

Simi: You spend a lot of time in the temple.
Vidya: We've always been taught to pray and to believe that there's a supernatural guiding force which is responsible for everything. But I don't think anyone from my family is much into it. They all pray for sure, even if it's on the bed. But I spend a lot of time.

Simi: What gives you such deep faith?
Vidya: I think it's a combination of what I have read and the experiences that people have had. I have seen great things happening to people. When you surrender, it's beautiful. You realise you're not the doer. I don't think any of us are doing anything. We're just playing out God's plan!

Simi: What type of a relationship do you have with God?
Vidya: I think the guy up there is in each one of us.

Simi: Do you talk to him?
Vidya: All the time! Prayer is a self-fulfilling process. When you genuinely want something, like Paulo Coelho said, 'The Universe conspires to get it for you'. Where there is doubt, it won't happen.

Simi: Has your faith ever wavered?
Vidya: Not much any longer. But there were times when I used to be a very badly behaved teenager! But somewhere faith took over and I've been calmer.

centenary of the first satyagraha...

It needed a Munnabhai to get Gandhiji back in contemporary consciousness...Today, the news channels are announcing the 100th anniversary of Gandhiji's famous South African episode which gave birth to "Satyagraha" , one of the most potent and effective tools of resistance and objection expression known to man.

Ironical that this date should coincide with a Sep 11 that has come to haunt many of our memories.

Violence within manifests as violence outside and each of us is a critical link in the creation of the world as we see it.

Maybe we need to remind ourselves more of a man who told us, "Be the change you wish to see in the world".

Date Rapes : an increasing phenomenon...

Navratri is shortly arriving, a widely celebrated festival in recent times.Alcohol and drug abuse have seen a growth too leading to extensive abuses and violations.

A common phenomenon in the last couple of years has been the marked increase of "date rapes" where odourless and colourless additives are added to hard or soft drinks. These chemicals seem to create a cyclonic craving for sex, a passive resistance and leads to unforeseen trauma later. It happens to the most educated and intelligent amongst us and lot of unsuspecting people are caught in subsequent webs of trauma.

It is important for everyone , especially the youth to be aware of this syndrome when they visit pubs and other spots as part of their socializing.one should never turn one's back to one's drink; or visit the rest room leaving a half-used glass behind for a continuation later.Always advisable to visit such events with very close and known friends and yet be on the alert.A lot of date rapes are known to have been perpetuated by close friends and known acquaintances.

To me, more than the physical act of sex, non-consensual sex is a blatant violation that can leave behind so many scars. It is a violation of the fundamental dignity of a person and can lead to a humiliated existence.Anger and resentment can affect future relationships and make one very vulnerable to hurt.I have seen and interacted with people who have been victims of this syndrome.

I would not suggest people to stop enjoying their parties and the like. To each their own in their entertainment and recreation choices; but please be on guard always.

The price one pays for a lack of alertness and awareness can be very high....

simplicity, the essence of beauty...

when it comes to meeting and knowing celebs, I have led a very chequered life, it would seem. Some I have grown up with, some I have seen grow and others, I have had an opportunity to closely interact. One is witness to the struggle, the frustrations and so on before success decides to bless their efforts..

Observing these parallel universes has been a learning by itself for me...

A recent addition to this list has been Vidya Balan, the talk of the town after her performances in Parineeta and LRM...have had occasion to know her literally since she was born...a simple, straight forward person, whose sense of focussedness has been a revelation..single-minded determination to reach where she is now..yet retaining her humility and down-to-earthiness..prayer has been her forte, her anchor..had a recent encounter with her just before the release of LRM when she come to pray at our community celebrations of Ganeshutsav...very humbly, she wanted all of us to pray for her impending release...that we did...

am very glad for you, vidya and rather proud at your achievements..You have a long way to go..God Bless...

in the ghetto...and in paradise...

As the snow flies
On a cold and gray Chicago morning
A poor little baby child is born in the ghetto
And his mama cries
cause if theres one thing that she dont need
Its another hungry mouth to feed in the ghetto
People, dont you understand
The child needs a helping hand
Or he’ll grow to be an angry young man some day

Take a look at you and me
Are we too blind to see
Do we simply turn our heads and look the other way

Well the world turns
And a hungry little boy with a runny nose plays in the street
As the cold wind blows in the ghetto

And his hunger burns
So he starts to roam the streets at night
And he learns how to steal and he learns how to fight in the ghetto

Then one night in desperation
A young man breaks away
He buys a gun, steals a car, tries to run, but he don't get far

And his mama cries
As a crowd gathers round an angry young man
Face down on the street with a gun in his hand in the ghetto

As her young man dies,
On a cold and gray chicago morning,
Another little baby child is born in the ghetto

– “In the ghetto” by Elvis Presley

She calls out to the man on the street
"Sir, can you help me?
It's cold and I've nowhere to sleep,
Is there somewhere you can tell me?"

He walks on, doesn't look back
He pretends he can't hear her
Starts to whistle as he crosses the street
Seems embarrassed to be there

Oh think twice, it's another day for
You and me in paradise
Oh think twice, it's just another day for you,
You and me in paradise

She calls out to the man on the street
He can see she's been crying
She's got blisters on the soles of her feet
Can't walk but she's trying

Oh think twice...

Oh lord, is there nothing more anybody can do
Oh lord, there must be something you can say

You can tell from the lines on her face
You can see that she's been there
Probably been moved on from every place
'Cos she didn't fit in there

Oh think twice...

father of natural farming...

Yesterday's article in the TOI about Bhaskar Save receiving a honour for his waste and dryland development efforts gladdened me no end.

Amongst the people who have made a significant impact in my life, Fukuoka and Bhaskar Save stand out. Fukuoka's book , One Straw Revolution and my subsequent meet with him re-oriented my perceptions tremendously.Bhaskar Save, I have been privileged to meet up more often during various interfaces inclusive of visits to his farm near Mumbai. The natural and intuitive intelligence of the man amazes me each time.

To me, he represents a key development space alternative with large scale impacts in areas of mass healthy chemical free food production at very low cost and environmental sustenance deliverables at amazing levels( i have seen or heard of no other strategy where water table increases so abundantly and so rapidly).A gateway to a dignified lifestyle for the teeming millions of our country who struggle with poverty and malnutrition issues.

Would such developmental initiatives see the light of day? I am definitely hopeful...

everyday heroes....

At a fundraising dinner for a school that serves learning disabled
children, the father of one of the students delivered a speech that
would never be forgotten by all who attended.
After extolling the school and its dedicated staff, he offered a question:
"When not interfered with by outside influences, everything nature does
is done with perfection. Yet my son, Shay, cannot learn things as other
children do. He cannot understand things as other children do.
Where is the natural order of things in my son?"

The audience was stilled by the query. The father continued. "I believe
that when a child like Shay, physically and mentally handicapped comes
into the world, an opportunity to realize true human nature presents
itself, and it comes, in the way other people treat that child."
Then he told the following story: Shay and his father had walked past a
park where some boys Shay knew were playing baseball. Shay asked, "Do
you think they'll let me play?"
Shay's father knew that most of the boys would not want someone like
Shay on their team, but the father also understood that if his son were
allowed to play, it would give him a much-needed sense of belonging and
some confidence to be accepted by others in spite of his handicaps.
Shay's father approached one of the boys on the field and asked if Shay
could play, not expecting much. The boy looked around for guidance and
a few boys nodded approval, why not? So he took matters into his own
hands and said, "We're losing by six runs and the game is in the eighth inning.
I guess he can be on our team and we'll try to put him in to bat in the
ninth inning."

Shay struggled over to the team's bench put on a team shirt with a
broad smile and his Father had a small tear in his eye and warmth in his heart.
The boys saw the father's joy at his son being accepted. In the bottom
of the eighth inning, Shay's team scored a few runs but was still
behind by three. In the top of the ninth inning, Shay put on a glove
and played in the right field. Even though no hits came his way, he was
obviously ecstatic just to be in the game and on the field, grinning
from ear to ear as his father waved to him from the stands.
In the bottom of the ninth inning, Shay's team scored again. Now, with
two outs and the bases loaded, the potential winning run was on base
and Shay was scheduled to be next at bat.
At this juncture, do they let Shay bat and give away their chance to
win the game?
Surprisingly, Shay was given the bat. Everyone knew that a hit was all
but impossible 'cause Shay didn't even know how to hold the bat
properly, much less connect with the ball.
However, as Shay stepped up to the plate, the pitcher, recognizing the
other team putting winning aside for this moment in Shay's life, moved
in a few steps to lob the ball in softly so Shay could at least be able
to make contact. The first pitch came and Shay swung clumsily and missed.
The pitcher again took a few steps forward to toss the ball softly
towards Shay. As the pitch came in, Shay swung at the ball and hit a
slow ground ball right back to the pitcher.
The game would now be over, but the pitcher picked up the soft grounder
and could have easily thrown the ball to the first baseman. Shay would
have been out and that would have been the end of the game.
Instead, the pitcher threw the ball right over the head of the first
baseman, out of reach of all team mates. Everyone from the stands and
both teams started yelling, "Shay, run to first! Run to first!" Never
in his life had Shay ever ran that far but made it to first base.
He scampered down the baseline, wide-eyed and startled. Everyone
yelled, "Run to second, run to second!" Catching his breath, Shay
awkwardly ran towards second, gleaming and struggling to make it to second base.
By the time Shay rounded towards second base, the right fielder had the
ball, the smallest guy on their team, who had a chance to be the hero
for his team for the first time. He could have thrown the ball to the
second-baseman for the tag, but he understood the pitchers intentions
and he too intentionally threw the ball high and far over the
third-baseman's head. Shay ran toward third base deliriously as the
runners ahead of him circled the bases toward home. All were screaming,
"Shay, Shay, Shay, all the Way Shay"

Shay reached third base, the opposing shortstop ran to help him and!
turned him in the direction of third base, and shouted, "Run to third!
Shay, run to third" As Shay rounded third, the boys from both teams and
those watching were on their feet were screaming, "Shay, run home!"
Shay ran to home, stepped on the plate, and was cheered as the hero who
hit the "grand slam" and won the game for his team.
That day," said the father softly with tears now rolling down his face,
the boys from both teams helped bring a piece of true love and humanity
into this world."

Shay didn't make it to another summer and died that winter, having
never forgotten being the hero and making his Father so happy and
coming home and seeing his Mother tearfully embrace her little hero of the day!

the personal touch....

when we think air india or indian hostesses, what comes to mind more often than not is cribs and complaints, almost habitually....read an interesting first person share on a fellow blogger's site...check it out...http://sigmund007.blogspot.com/ ......humans make all the difference, beyond roles and definitions....

close encounters....

2 recent encounters stand out...
one , a svelte socialite I know, who was going through a heart break...she was feeling abused....her last date was now an "item" at local parties with her best friend..."how could he do that to me?, she was asking me. But, dont people forever do this, day in and day out? carefully masked , maybe, but is it not almost an omnipresence...do we really know to relate?when people say, "i love you" are they really meaning, "i need you" and "i need you to need me"...i wonder....
could not help contrasting this conversation with another I had a few months back....it was with a commercial sex worker who had called me to help her father out....she was on a ngo connect...i knew that this was her step father and he had been pretty abusive to her....when i asked her about her concern for him after all that she had gone through...she just said, "sometime people have compulsions....my mother likes him....he has been able to give her some happiness...in an otherwise deserted life...how does it matter if i help out.....all of us use each other all the time....sometimes individually and sometimes collectively....some subtly and yet others not so subtly....nafrat sirf humhe andhar kha jaati hai, saab, " so saying she signed off..
there is nothing glamourous...in the way she behaved....just a mechanism she had devised for herself in understanding life....

kuch baat hai hum sabhi mein.....

saab, aapke paas do minute hain?
The cab driver halted me as I was getting off. I knew him by face...was a regular at the cab stand just around our locale.
I paused. He wanted to talk....... about some domestic matter that was bothering him.
we connected.....so many faceless people we meet , day in and day out....histories behind each of them..legacies of experiences , of feelings.......
if we only pause to hear.....life speaks in a million languages....
a moment beyond facades and masks..a moment where just the humans in us connect, no roles we play or identities that have got created.....just human to human.....

kuch khaas hai hum sabi mein....

was listening to "har gadi badal rahi hai roop zindagi"...the song from kal ho na ho..amazing...lyrics, composition....and singing..
being connected to events/artistes management; have had the privilege to have a few of these guys as close friends..shankar, a friend of many years....both as a local chemburite and as a college mate..and later lot of projects together...feel very proud to see the work emerging from him and his pals....
the list of privileges life has granted me has been endless...amazing creators....each one of them...in music, theatre, artworld, sound engineering....direction, production...the process of "creativity" holds an endless fascination for me....and so do creators....
kuch khaas hai hum sabi mein, kuch baat hai hum sabi mein.....the cadbury jingle immortalised by shankar....can never tire of listening to it....just 2 lines, but conveys so much and so aesthetically....
creativity in all its myriad forms of expression....manifestations of a dynamic spirituality...

everyday heroes...

recently attended the launch of a music group....featuring a differently abled person aided by his sister, also a very good singer...yet another of innumerable occasions to feel inspired by the human spirit...so many odds, the struggle, the hope....
the recent deluge in mumbai was an opportunity to watch such spirit at work....csws(commercial sex workers ) helping people tide over; i myself was helped by a group of slum children who guided me through a difficult lane , indicating where the storm gutters were, so that I did not slip into it....was often left wondering, they probably had their homes washed off in the deluge...
that may challenge deep set stereotype positionalities for some...
the mumbai riots and its aftermath, the bomb blasts also brought so many touching human expressions to the fore...like a lady i remember in Dharavi, Khaleda.....who would dare to go to the streets and pick up the injured all by herself...and bring them to the local mosque compound which was a point of collection for our rescue teams....neither , the wo/menfolk of her locality nor the clerics supported her.... she was a one man army who might have enabled the saving of more than a 100 people....irrespective of their religious or other denominations...
have often observed street children get together to save one of their fraternity who might be ill...normally, everyone is a threat, a competition...a spare shirt is given to the laundry and never collected..because it may get stolen while they sleep....but i remember this boy, murugan, who took seriously ill and needed hospitalization...grant road station....a helpline outreach had got in touch from nana chowk...when i reached the place and organized some adhoc donations to enable the boy's admission.....a few of those kids who already knew me...came up to me saying they would like to contribute....it was a dilemna...knowing their states...but then not giving them an opportunity to help one of their fraternity to me did not make sense....they spread a handkerchief; everyone ran here and there; and they brought out various resources from their various hiding places....i knew the extent of saving of some of the boys....i saw them give off everything....holding nothing back....
to my suggestion that they give only a part of it, they just nonchalantly said, "fikar mat karo...kal phir haath paiir chala lenge...." they earned money through various loading jobs....
I dont know about you guys, I still do not have the capacity to give off all I have materially to anyone...there is always a hold back....
the human spirit..always throbbing, if we only pause to hear it....
for me, given a long period of association with the ngo sector, both organized and ad hoc....my contributions would never match my personal enrichment..it has been invaluable...and when i experience my own roadblocks, it serves me well, when i see the odds stacked against some of these guys....

strange choices...

Sometimes very baffling to observe people and watch their choices...emotions are energy and they energize our actions..we chose fear over confidence; misery over joy..some of us infact feel guilty about happy/joyous moments....we energize our own efforts with negativity....blessing it with failure....
